Battery storage, sized on your night load

A battery is not a trophy. It is the number of hours your lights, fans and pump keep running after the sun goes down — and that number should come from your actual load, not a brochure.

Short answer: Battery size should be calculated from your actual night load, not picked as a round number. On most UAE farms that lands between 5 and 20 kWh of LiFePO4 lithium storage, covering pen lights, shed fans, a worker room fridge and sometimes an evening pump cycle. Sited in shade with airflow, storage turns a diesel generator from a daily chore into a rare backup.

What is actually on the wall: a hybrid inverter, the battery, and a proper distribution board with breakers — not a box of cells wired into your existing panel and left to cook in the sun.

Battery & backup

How we work out the size

We add up what genuinely runs after dark — pen lights, shed fans, the fridge and phone chargers in the worker room, sometimes an evening pump cycle — multiply by the hours you need it, add headroom for a cloudy day, and that is the battery. On most farms it lands somewhere between 5 and 20 kWh.

Why oversizing is not generosity

A battery twice the size you need is money parked in a cabinet, and it still ages whether you cycle it or not. We would rather size it correctly and leave room to add a module later if your load grows.

Turning the generator into a backup

The goal on a farm is not usually to throw the generator away — it is to stop starting it every day. Once solar and storage carry the routine load, the generator sits there for the unusual week, and the daily fuel run stops.

Heat is the enemy

Batteries lose life fast in a hot metal box. We site the cabinet in shade with airflow, keep it off the ground, and where the load justifies it we specify cells rated for the temperatures we actually see here.

Battery questions

How many hours will a battery run my farm?
That depends entirely on your night load. A pen of lights and fans is a very different figure from a room with a split AC. We calculate it from your actual equipment on the site visit and show you the hours before you buy.
Lithium or lead acid?
For almost every job we do now, lithium — it takes deeper cycling, lasts longer in this heat when sited properly, and needs no watering. Lead acid can still make sense on a very small budget, and we will say so if it does.
Can I add more battery later?
Yes, if the system is specified for it from day one. We plan the inverter and cabinet with that in mind so a later module is an addition rather than a rebuild.
Do I still need the generator?
Keep it. Once solar and storage carry the routine load it becomes a rare backup rather than a daily chore, which is the outcome most owners actually want.
