Solar yard and street lights for farms

A dark yard is a safety problem before it is anything else. Lighting is also the easiest load to put on solar, because it only ever runs when the battery is the one working.

Short answer: Farm yards in the UAE can be lit either with standalone all-in-one solar street lights, each with its own panel and LiFePO4 battery on a pole, or by running the lighting from the property's main off-grid system. Standalone units suit a long track or a far corner with no cabling. Running lights off the main system is usually better value where an array and battery already exist, and it lets you switch and control everything from one place.

Two ways to do it

Standalone all-in-one lights

Each pole carries its own panel, battery and LED head, and nothing is wired to anything. This is the right answer for a long access track, a gate a hundred metres from the shed, or a corner of the plot where trenching a cable would cost more than the light. They come on at dusk by themselves and need no attention beyond a wash.

Lighting from the main system

If you already have an off-grid array and a battery for the pump and the fans, adding pen and yard lighting to it is usually better value than buying separate units. One battery to look after, one place to switch things, and you can size for how long the lights actually need to stay on.

What we watch for on a farm

  • Mounting height that puts the panel and light out of reach of animals and vehicles
  • Cable in conduit rather than strung across the yard where it will be caught
  • Enough light where people actually work — the trough, the gate, the pump — rather than an even spread of nothing
  • Panels angled so they can be washed without a ladder truck

Dust, again

A light with a dirty panel simply stops lasting the night, and it will do that gradually enough that nobody notices until winter. Whichever route you take, the panels are a cleaning job like any other array.

Solar lighting questions

Are all-in-one solar street lights any good for a farm?
For a track, a gate or an isolated corner, yes — no cabling and nothing to switch. For lighting a working yard where you already have an off-grid system, running the lights from that system usually gives better control and better value.
How long will solar lights stay on at night?
That depends on the battery in the unit and how clean the panel is. A dusty panel is the usual reason lights that once lasted till morning start dying at 2am.
Can you add lighting to my existing farm system?
Usually yes, if the array and battery have headroom. We check what is already there before quoting, and if the system is at its limit we will say so rather than overload it.
Do you install lighting for the pens as well as the yard?
Yes. Pen lighting, yard lighting and lighting at the pump and trough are all part of the same job, and we plan where the light actually needs to fall rather than spreading it evenly.
