Solar for worker rooms and staff accommodation

The room where your staff sleep is usually the load nobody sizes properly. It runs all night, every night, and on most farms it is the reason the generator never gets switched off.

Short answer: Small staff accommodation and farm worker rooms are a good fit for solar with battery storage, because the load — lights, fans, a fridge, phone charging and often one AC unit — is steady and mostly runs after dark. In the UAE this is normally a 3 to 6 kWp array with a battery sized on the night hours. It is the same off-grid arrangement we fit for azba, and it is what stops a generator running every evening.

Worker rooms

A steady load, mostly after dark

It is not a big load, but it is a relentless one. Lights and fans from sunset onwards, a fridge running around the clock, phones charging, and in the hot months an AC unit that has to work all night if anyone is going to sleep. That profile is why a panels-only system does almost nothing here and why storage carries the job.

What we size it from

  • How many rooms, and how many people in each
  • Whether there is an AC unit, and what type it is
  • The fridge — usually the one thing that must never go off
  • How many hours the lights and fans genuinely run

Why this is worth doing first

On a lot of farms the pump can wait for daylight but the room cannot wait for anything. Once the room is covered, the generator stops being an every-evening machine — which is the change owners and staff both notice.

Doing it properly, not cheaply

Cabling in conduit, a distribution board with real breakers, and the battery cabinet sited in shade with airflow. A worker room wired off a solar system by someone in a hurry is a fire risk, and we have been called out to fix exactly that more than once.

It has been done at scale here

The UAE has had a fully solar-powered labour accommodation in Ajman running around the clock, generating in the region of 280 to 315 kWh a day for a facility of six rooms. The idea is not experimental — it is just rarely done carefully at the small end, which is the end we work at.

Staff accommodation questions

Can solar run a worker room all night?
Yes, with a battery sized for it. Lights, fans, a fridge and phone charging are a modest load; an AC unit is the item that decides the battery size. We measure both on the free site visit.
What size system does staff accommodation need?
For a small farm accommodation with lights, fans, a fridge and one AC unit, typically 3 to 6 kWp with matched battery storage. More rooms or more cooling pushes it up, and past 10 kWp we will point you to a larger contractor.
Will it stop the generator completely?
It stops the routine running, which is where the cost and the noise are. We keep the generator in the design as a rare backup rather than pretending you will never need it.
Is it safe to add this to an existing room?
It is, done properly — conduit, a real distribution board, and equipment sited where it can stay cool. Done badly it is genuinely dangerous, and taking over that kind of installation is a job we are often called for.
